Ellen Swallow Richards '73 (first row, 2nd from right), instructor in sanitary chemistry, with MIT Chemistry staff, 1900.
The Institute's appointment of its first woman graduate, Ellen Swallow Richards '73, might be considered MIT's first "minority appointment". Richards served as instructor in sanitary chemistry from 1884 until her death in 1911. She created the first sanitary engineering laboratory in the United States. Booker T. Washington sought her advice on curriculum development and on staff recruitment for Tuskegee Institute.
