Boston Globe obituary for Linda Datcher Loury PhD ’78 (1952-2011), who co-authored Black Women in the Labor Force” (MIT Press, 1980) with MIT Sloan Professor Phyllis Wallace and Julianne Marie Malveaux PhD '80. Loury was married to fellow MIT economist Glenn Loury PhD ’76 and was an economics professor at Tufts University for 27 years.

In work dating back to the 1980s, [said her Tufts colleague Yannis Ioannides], she “provided the foundations for what we now call the economics of social interactions’’...Using the tools of economic research, Dr. Loury measured the effect of various factors on how people fare in the job market. Some seemed obvious, such as gender and race, but she brought fresh eyes to other details, such as the kinds of neighborhoods where people grow up, the nuanced differences among the universities they attend, and how well they do in college.
