Abstract

Today, MIT has a solid commitment to the racial diversification of its faculty. This task is more difficult because of the small number of African Americans who earn PhDs in the sciences and engineering. The first black faculty member at MIT [Joseph R. Applegate] was not engaged by the institution until 1956.
