Renowned architects Phil Freelon MArch ‘77 and David Adjaye (2016 MIT McDermott Awardee), share how their idea came to life for the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture. The structure is the result of their collaboration after Adjaye submitted their proposed design in 2009. Along with their late colleague J. Max Bond Jr., Freelon and Adjaye beat some of the world's most influential architects to win the commission.
